Some Signs Of Foundation Issues In Your Home

Posted on

If you see a few small cracks in the visible portion of your home's foundation, don't freak out. These small cracks are more than likely nothing more than the natural result of the concrete shrinking and settling as it cures. However, when you spot other issues that can indicate there is an actual problem with the foundation that should be fixed, you should have it done as soon as possible. You'll read about some signs of foundation concerns that may be serious here:

You notice there is poor drainage

One of the biggest causes of foundation problems is drainage issues. If you have water pooling around the base of your home at any point, or you always seem to have muddy areas even when it hasn't rained, then this can mean that the foundation has been damaged. All that water can cause the soil to expand and this can cause damage. Therefore, if you see pooling water, you want to have the foundation checked and have the drainage issues corrected.

There are some windows that are sticking in your house

Sometimes, windows can stick for reasons such as bad paint jobs or moisture. However, another common reason for sticking windows can be foundation problems. If there is a problem with the foundation that's allowing part of the home to sink, then this can put stress on the window frame in a way that makes it stick.

Your doors are giving you problems

You may notice that you have one or more doors that are giving you issues. You may see that there are gaps along the top of the door, or you may have problems opening and closing it. These things can also be indicative of a foundation issue.

There are visible cracks in the walls

If you have foundation problems causing the home to shift, then damages can start to show in the walls. In many cases, there can be cracks that develop in certain areas. These areas commonly include around the windows, around the doors, and near the ceiling at entryways.

You have floors that are uneven

If you notice any part of your floor is starting to become uneven, then this is a big sign that there are problems with the foundation. The unevenness can be subtle, or it can be very obvious. In either case, you really should have someone look at the foundation right away.
